JUDr. Petra Buzková
Member of the ECG, Minister of Education, Youth and PT
Born on 7 December 1965 in Prague. In 1984, she completed her secondary education at a Gymnasium and enrolled at the Faculty of Law, Charles University, Prague, where she studied until 1989. She is the great-granddaughter of František Modráček, the pre-war politician and senator for the Social Democratic Party. Ms Buzková has been a member of this party since 1989; in 1990, she was elected the party’s Vice-Chairwoman. In 1992, she started serving as an MP, first at the Czech National Council, then, from 1993, at the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, where she held the position of Vice-Chairwoman from 1996 to 2002. In 2000, she resigned as Vice-Chairwoman of the ČSSD, mainly because of her disapproval of the proposed amendment to the Election Act agreed by the ODS (Civic Democratic Party) and the Social Democrats. In February 2001, she was elected Chairwoman of the Prague branch of the ČSSD. She was the Minister of Education in Vladímír Špidla’s government between 15 July 2002 and 4 August 2004. Ms Buzková is married, the mother of one daughter.
