Prime Minister Fiala in Copenhagen: Strengthening Europe's eastern border is a priority
On 1 October 2025, Prime Minister Petr Fiala attended the informal European Council meeting in Copenhagen. The meeting focused on strengthening European security in the context of the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. The main topics were the protection of the EU's eastern border, further military and financial support to Ukraine and the development of common defence, including the strengthening of defence-industrial cooperation.
"At the informal meeting of the European Council we mainly discussed common defence. Violating the airspace of Poland, Romania or Estonia is proof that Russia is testing our readiness — and Europe must show unity, strength and determination. The Czech Republic supports the rapid reinforcement of the eastern border and initiatives to accelerate the introduction of modern technologies into defence, including the creation of a Drone Alliance with Ukraine. We have to face up to all threats," said Prime Minister Petr Fiala and emphasised the role of the Czech Republic in the Ammunition Initiative.
At the same time, Prime Minister Fiala noted that the government decided this week to ban the entry into the Czech Republic of holders of diplomatic and service passports issued by the Russian Federation, with the exception of accredited diplomats and their family members. According to him, strengthening the eastern border and the common European defence is crucial for the long-term security of the Czech Republic and the entire European Union.
