The Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Petr Fiala, met on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, at Kramář Villa with Manfred Weber, Chairman of the European People's Party Group in the European Parliament, which is the largest political group in this institution. The main topics of discussion were migration, the impact of US tariffs, and the priorities of the European Parliament, including the revision of the Green Deal.

Prime Minister Fiala emphasised the necessity of revising key aspects of the Green Deal, particularly in the areas of the automotive industry, the emissions trading system, and climate targets for 2040. "Our goal must be a strong and competitive European economy that is able to withstand global competition and ensure safety and quality of life for its citizens," said the Prime Minister. He also appreciated the growing support among Member States for pragmatic adjustments to current climate legislation, as the Czech Republic envisions them.

Another topic was migration, where the Prime Minister praised the European Commission's more realistic approach and positively evaluated the proposal for a new returns directive, which the Czech Republic has long advocated. According to the Prime Minister, it is now necessary for the European Parliament to contribute to the swift adoption of this legislation. Both politicians also discussed the impact of US tariffs on European exports. Prime Minister Fiala described the unilateral steps taken by the USA as unfair and harmful to all EU citizens. He emphasised that these steps cannot be overlooked and that it is essential for Europe to be prepared to respond to them. According to Fiala, it is crucial for the Union to act unitedly and firmly in defending European economic interests.

The meeting also touched upon the EU's defence policy and upcoming debates on the European budget. The Prime Minister emphasised the need to maintain priority for defence, infrastructure, cohesion policy and agriculture, whilst warning against increasing debt. "The meeting with Manfred Weber confirmed our shared commitment to a strong, secure and competitive Europe. Cooperation with the EPP plays a key role in this regard," concluded the Prime Minister.
