Prime Minister Fiala held talks with European Council President António Costa in Brno
On Friday, 5 September 2025, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala met with European Council President António Costa in Brno to discuss preparations for the upcoming EU summits and current European policy priorities, including support for the European economy and climate policy.
The meeting took place within the framework of planned visits of the President of the European Council to EU Member States. Prime Minister Petr Fiala received António Costa at the famous Arnold Villa in Brno. Before the meeting, however, the two leaders toured the premises of the neighbouring Villa Tugendhat, designed by German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
"We discussed, for example, the EU's climate policy, which needs to be reconsidered so that it does not threaten European industry. But it is not enough just to talk about and criticise it," the Prime Minister said after the meeting and noted that the government is putting forward concrete proposals and is succeeding in gaining support for them from other countries, as is currently the case for the issue of the ETS 2 emission allowances.
"I emphasised the need to reduce energy prices in Europe, to kick-start the European economy and to abolish unnecessary regulations and bureaucracy. We also focused on foreign policy and security, whether it is Ukraine, the Middle East or relations with the USA," concluded Petr Fiala.
