On Saturday, 20 September, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic Petr Fiala and the Minister of Defence Jana Černochová opened the 25th anniversary NATO Days and the 16th Air Force Days at the Leoš Janáček Airport in Mošnov. At the opening ceremony, Petr Fiala delivered a short speech, visited the exhibition of modern weapons purchased for the Czech Army and met with representatives of the defence industry. The Prime Minister also responded to the current security situation, where Russian drones and aircraft have been violating the airspace of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in recent days. That is why Petr Fiala-led government decided to establish a coordinating group for anti-drone protection of the state at the State Security Council.

"We respond to the current security situation where Russian drones are flying in Romania and Poland, some 200 km from our border. Our priority is to ensure the safety of our citizens and to be prepared for such threats. That is why we are establishing a coordinating group for anti-drone protection at the State Security Council, which will include experts from the Ministries of Defence, Interior, Transport, Army and Police, among others," announced Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Their task will be to monitor developments in technology, propose various measures, including legislative ones, and coordinate the activities of individual authorities in this area.

In his speech, the Prime Minister also recalled that his cabinet had launched the biggest modernisation of the Czech Army in its modern history in order to make the Czech Republic stand its ground in an environment where Putin's Russia refuses to negotiate, occupies foreign territory, sends drones to our neighbours and thus threatens the eastern wing of the alliance. "We are finally sending enough money for defence and we have passed a law to gradually increase the spending every year. We have launched the most extensive modernisation of the army. You can see some of our results right here — not only CV90 infantry fighting vehicles, but also Leopard tanks, MADR radars, Venom and Viper helicopters, and SPYDER air defence," said Petr Fiala. The SPYDER system, which will soon be delivered to our army, could be seen for the first time in Mošnov.

"NATO is based on a simple principle: we all share defence capabilities, technology and knowledge. Thanks to this, we can deter aggressors and NATO is the most successful defence alliance in the world. Its indispensability is evident today, when once again, a war is raging in Eastern Europe. Moscow refuses to negotiate, occupying foreign territory, sending drones to our neighbours, warplanes over the Baltic countries and trying to see what it can get away with. These are not distant threats, but issues that unfold almost literally at our doorstep," the Prime Minister continued, adding that thanks to the government's actions in recent years, not only Czech airspace is better protected than ever before.

The Prime Minister also met with representatives of the defence industry as part of the NATO Days and the Czech Air Force Days. A number of companies in this sector are coming up with new technologies and developing new products, which is crucial for maintaining competitiveness on international markets and also for the Czech economy.

"The future of our security lies only in the North Atlantic Alliance and anyone who looks around must see that. Yet some are questioning the sense of investing in the military; they intend to stop purchases of state-of-the-art aircraft, cancel international projects and want a referendum on NATO membership. With today's security situation we cannot afford such a gamble," the Prime Minister concluded.
