On Tuesday 29 September 2026, the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš, met with the Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Giorgia Meloni, at the Straka Academy. The leaders discussed the implementation of the 2026–2030 Action Plan between Italy and the Czech Republic for strategic bilateral and EU cooperation, economic cooperation, strengthening the European Union’s competitiveness, preparations for the EU’s future multiannual financial framework, the fight against illegal migration, and other topics on the agenda for the forthcoming European Council meeting.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Czech-Italian relations are outstanding, adding that it was a great honour and pleasure for him to welcome Giorgia Meloni to Prague. The Prime Ministers exchanged copies of the adopted Action Plan for the Czech-Italian cooperation.

“I am very pleased that we were able to discuss key European issues, energy, the agenda for the next European Council meeting and the preparations for the EU’s future multiannual financial framework. The Action Plan for the Czech-Italian Cooperation for the period 2026–2030 is important for our countries. It is a significant milestone in our relations and provides a clear framework for our cooperation. We want it to translate into specific projects and excellent results for our citizens and our economies. The Action Plan comprehensively reflects the strategic areas of cooperation between our countries, such as strengthening industrial competitiveness, enhancing Europe’s security and other,” said Andrej Babiš.

Combating illegal migration was also a key topic of discussion. Together with Italy, we are an integral part of a group of like-minded states calling for a tightening of migration policy.

The leaders also agreed to hold a major joint exhibition on Pompeii and Herculaneum, which is being organised by the National Museum in Prague in collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. "It is a big deal. The exhibition will serve as a tangible symbol of our excellent relations. It will take place in 2028. The number eight accompanies Czech history in many significant moments, while in 2028 we will also commemorate the 110th anniversary of the establishment of our state," the Prime Minister stated.

Italy is one of the Czechia’s most important trading partners. “Trade between our countries rose to a record €18.3 billion last year. We are delighted to have such prominent Italian investors here. “Investment by Czech companies in Italy is also gradually increasing; they have already invested a total of 4 billion euros there,” added the Czech Prime Minister.
