March 19, 2008: Lithuanian Premier Expresses Support for Radar Construction in the CR

After his talks with Czech Premier Mirek Topolánek, the visiting Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas of the Republic of Lithuania told today’s press conference that Lithuania supports the efforts evolved by the Czech Republic and Poland to get involved in the US anti-missile defence system. "Europe will need a defence system. It will strengthen the transatlantic relations as well as the security of Europe and the NATO states," G. Kirkilas was quoted as saying. He also confirmed that Lithuania maintains very good bilateral relations with the Czech Republic, and expressed interest in further promoting links between the two countries. During his talks with Premier Mirek Topolánek the Lithuanian Prime Minister discussed the Czech Republic’s investment possibilities in Lithuania, a country where several Czech companies are active today. "There could be more of those," stressed G. Kirkilas at the press conference. The Lithuanian Premier went on to emphasize his country’s interest in fostering intense cooperation in the energy sector.

Premier Mirek Topolánek described the Czech-Lithuanian contacts as close. "Lithuania and the Czech Republic are members of the European family and members of the NATO, implementing joint tasks in joint missions," said the Czech Premier. "We share common concern for energy security, for diversification of energy supplies, and the Eastern dimension of the European policy," said Mirek Topolánek, adding that another common subject in both countries is coping with the crimes of communism.
